Are We Asking the Right Questions?

As a result of acting as careful guardians of taxpayer resources, federal and state officials are often skeptical of new technology and are concerned about how the technology will be utilized by the recipient. One concerned official asked, “So, how do we know that the clients aren’t just going to use a tablet to play ‘angry birds’?”

The question should be, “How does this technology improve the life of an individual with needs the ability to function in today’s society?”
As various federal programs such as the Workforce Innovation and Opportunities Act and the Enable Act focus on improving opportunities for students transitioning from school to adult life, focus on training people with disabilities to participate in the 21st Century workforce and assist them in saving money to support their efforts to reduce dependency on various human service systems, it appears Medicaid/Medicare is moving backwards.
